Prenatal care guidelines provide for the consideration of the offer of prenatal diagnostics for pregnant women from the age of 35, because chromosomal abnormalities clearly occur more often with rising age of the mother. Basically, however, this disorder can occur in any pregnancy. 70 % of children with trisomy 21 are born by women younger than 35 years.

Already in early pregnancy, there are hints on these disorders. With a blood test of the mother and the ultrasound-measurement of the baby's thickness of the neck (ideally at around 12 completed weeks of pregnancy), the risk of chromosomal abnormalities can be calculated. Up till 90 % of trisomies 21 can be detected this way.
